Mediterranean Sunset in Arroyo Grande, CA
This project was a full design-build installation in Arroyo Grande for a younger family with two little kids. Their home had just been remodeled, and the interior was professionally designed, so we approached the landscape with the goal of creating an exterior that matched the same level of quality and style.
The property began as an open yard with a rolling hillside, and the clients wanted a natural outdoor hangout area centered around a custom gas fire pit. To give the space a more organic feel, we designed a gravel walkway and patio system and integrated planting pockets into the gravel to soften the look and create a unique texture throughout the yard.
Because the home sat higher than the new outdoor area, there were elevation changes to address. We designed and installed a clean stairway that led down from the main parking area. Instead of using plain gray concrete, we added a gray integral color that tied into the home’s palette while giving the hardscape a richer appearance.
Since the property is in the countryside, landscape lighting played an important role. We used lighting to safely illuminate the walkway and highlight the Mediterranean-inspired plantings included in the design. We also took inspiration from the remodeled interior—mirroring pottery, colors, and certain design elements—and carried those ideas into the landscape to create a cohesive indoor-outdoor connection.
With two young children, the family needed a usable lawn space for play. We shaped a well-sized lawn area that connects naturally with the gravel patio and hillside planting, giving them a functional and welcoming outdoor environment designed for long-term enjoyment.
